Diplomatic ‘Spice Girl’

It was an afternoon of high tea and high fashion as London’s women diplomats gathered at Hotel Verta, London’s vertical gateway in Battersea, for a fundraiser with a difference.

For the ‘Taste of Spice’ fashion show, the High Commissioner for Grenada, Ruth Elizabeth Rouse, dispensed with her sober suits for one afternoon and took to the catwalk to model a selection of elegant dresses by designer Pat Alexis-Nelson. Guests also heard poetry from award-winning Grenadian poet Akima Paul.

The frivolity was all for a good cause, of course. All money raised will go towards the Commonwealth Countries League Education Fund, which raises money to sponsor the schooling of talented young girls in the Commonwealth from underprivileged backgrounds.

One scholar, Ladi Dariya, was present at the event and her inspirational story had WDS members and friends reaching for their cheque books.
