EU Presidency goes green

To launch the start of the Swedish EU presidency – and to promote environmental sustainability – the Swedish Embassy is planning a ‘Green Mission’, a week-long celebration in July highlighting environmental issues, as well as raising awareness of contemporary Swedish culture.

A highlight of the Green Mission will be Sweden on Stage, a free public event on Hampstead Heath on 4 July, where Benny Andersson of ABBA fame and his band will be the headline act, playing their own eclectic mix of folk, pop and dance music.

Family activities will have an environmental sustainability theme with a twist – such as trying ecological food, building your own recycled instrument or toning up with Friskis & Svettis, Sweden’s ’sweaty and healthy’ fitness club.

Climate change will be high on the Swedish EU Presidency agenda and Sweden will be coordinating the EU when world leaders meet in Copenhagen this December with the aim of reaching a global post-Kyoto agreement.
