Corps news in brief – Embassy 19 – October 2009

Ambassador’s ‘hitman’ jailed

A delivery man, who sparked a diplomatic security alert by threatening to assassinate the Turkish Ambassador, has been jailed for three-and-a-half months.

Idris Savas, 37, a Kurd living in east London, claimed in phone calls he was part of a cell set up by the PKK to assassinate Ambassador Yigit Alpogan and another embassy official. Diplomatic protection squads were alerted and the “targets” put in safe houses. Savas, a heroin addict, told the court he had pretended to be a hitman “to feel important”.
