Nordic lights for peace
There was a Nordic nip in the air and Trafalgar Square glistened after the early November snowfall, but that did not deter throngs of Norwegians, Londoners and curious tourists joining Norwegian Ambassador Kim Traavik, the Governing Mayor of Oslo, Stian Berger Rosland and the Lord Mayor of Westminster for the traditional lighting of the Christmas Tree which marks the real start of the festive season in the capital.
The tree is given every year as a symbol of peace, and a gift of thanks from the people of Norway to the people of Britain for coming to their aid during the World War II.
This year the ceremony coincided with a very special photographic exhibition at South Africa House on Trafalgar Square featuring the four South African Nobel Peace Laureates, Albert Luthuli, Desmond Tutu, F W de Klerk and Nelson Mandela co-hosted by the Oslo Peace Centre and the South African High Commission. |
