World Maritime Day
The world’s shipping nations and representatives of the shipping industry gathered at the newly-refurbished headquarters of the IMO to celebrate World Maritime Day on 25 September. In his message to the audience, IMO Secretary General Efthimious Mitropoulos said the IMO had “served the shipping industry well” in the 60 years since the organisation’s inception. Terrorism, piracy, climate change and energy security were pressing threats but the Secretary General said he was confident the IMO was ready to face the challenges of a globalised world and promote safety and security at sea, strive for greener shipping and keep world trade flowing smoothly. He concluded by reminding all present that the IMO “touches the life of nearly everyone on the planet.”
