South Africa Freedom Day
Diplomats, politicians and anti-apartheid
campaigners gathered at South Africa House for a freedom feast and to congratulate departing South African High Commissioner Lindiwe Mabuza. In her final Freedom Day speech, the High Commissioner lived up to her reputation as a people’s poet in a speech that reflected on the progress South Africa had made in its first 15 years of freedom. Speaking about the recent elections she described how 7,000 South Africans queued to vote in the elections whereas before the Square was the site of anti-apartheid vigils. “It was one of the proudest moments we have experienced in this building,” she said, and thanked all the guests from around the world who had joined the struggle against apartheid to make that day possible.
