Afghan ‘loya jirga’
The Afghan National Day had the feverish atmosphere of a loya jirga, coinciding with the much-anticipated presidential elections. Diplomats, MPs and journalists were all eager to hear from Ambassador Homayoun Tandar about the progress of the elections – and the ring of mobile phones mixed with the traditional Afghan music as guests discussed the future of the country over steaming bowls of delicious qorma (stew) and palao (rice).
