Birth of a nation
The year, Pakistan’s Republic Day celebrations marked the 70th anniversary of Resolution Day when the idea of a separate Muslim state was formally adopted. Ambassadors, cabinet ministers, members of parliament and the media joined High Commissioner Wajid Shamsul Hasan, the Speaker of the House of Lords Baroness Hayman and the Chairman of Pakistan’s Senate Farooq Hamid Naek in marking the auspicious occasion.
In his Republic Day address, High Commissioner Shamsul Hasan reminded guests that Pakistan had been through tough times, but was determined to “defeat the forces of darkness”.
Awards were given to members of the community that had contributed to better UK-Pakistan understanding after which everyone gathered around for the traditional cutting of the Republic Day birthday cake.
