The forgotten war
On the 60th Anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War, the South Korean Embassy hosted a moving reception for British veterans who served during the war, along with representatives of the 21 nations who fought for the country’s freedom. The event took place on the HMS Belfast, a retired warship that saw active service in the Korean War. The evening included a video message from Korea’s President Lee Myung-Bak and a short film on the history of the war. The guest of honour was retired Vice Admiral Hahm Myung-soo, who served on HMS Belfast with the Royal Navy for four months in 1952. Reunited with his former shipmates after 58 years, Admiral Hahm thanked them after which, in a touching ceremony, he and Korea’s naval officers saluted all those who had come to their aid.
