Lord Mayor’s Easter Banquet
2011 has been “a momentous” year with a confluence of events that could “change the course of history,” Foreign Secretary William Hague told assembled heads of mission and senior office bearers in the City of London at the annual Lord Mayor’s Easter Banquet. The death of Osama bin Laden – a decade after the 9/11 atrocities – had delivered a blow terrorist networks, he said, while the Arab Spring could signal “the greatest advance for human rights and freedom since the end of the Cold War”. But the democratic movements in North Africa and the Middle East cannot achieve this on their own, he added: “It is time for our generation to offer its own hand of friendship to the people of the countries on the southern borders of Europe.” Echoing these sentiments, the Lord Mayor of London Alderman Michael Bear, a civil engineer, said bridges between nations are built through commerce and trade. He admitted it had been a “lean” year but added that the City, in cooperation with the UK government, was putting in stronger struts to support the commercial bridges of the future.
