Mauritius Miracle
Friends of Mauritius gathered at the High Commission to celebrate the small island’s 42nd Anniversary of Independence. In his address, High Commissioner Abhimanu Kundasamy quoted Nobel Laureate Robert Stiglitz when he talked of the “Mauritius miracle” and highlighted two statistics to remind guests of the achievements of the small island: life expectancy has risen from 32 years at independence to an average of 75, while GDP per capita has swelled more than tenfold from $800 to $10,000 today. That certainly got the glasses raised as the Marshal proposed a toast.
