Paraguay turns 200
On 16 May, the soaring ceiling of Church House near Westminster Abbey resounded to the sounds of the Paraguayan Bicentennial Chamber Orchestra in a concert to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of Paraguay’s Independence, hosted by the Ambassador of Paraguay, Mr Miguel Solano-Lopez. Directed by the acclaimed conductor Luis Szarán, the musical ensemble brought together some of Paraguay’s finest musicians, including gifted youngsters from Paraguay’s ground-breaking ‘Sounds of the Earth’ Project for children. The programme covered a range of Paraguay’s own compositions frm the 19th century to the present, and included works in a variety of styles, notably the harp, and some wonderfully improvised instruments.
