Ambassador Kalambekova gives her Independence Day speech
Historic achievement
Welcoming guests to celebrate Kyrgyzstan’s 20th Anniversary of Independence, Ambassador Baktygul Kalambekova said the occasion was a pause for reflection on the “hard time of progress” the ancient nation had endured in its 20 short years of existence as a state. The Ambassador said the October elections were the most important event of the year, introducing the first parliamentary democracy in Central Asia. Also addressing the audience was the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps who took the opportunity to congratulate his old friend, the outgoing caretaker president of Kyrgyzstan, Rosa Otubayeva. A former Ambassador to London, Mrs Otunbayeva had managed to stabilise Kyrgyzstan after its upheavals last year and had presided over the first peaceful transition of power in the country’s history. “We are all proud of her achievements and we wish her well,” he said.
