Into the light
The 20th anniversary of Macedonia’s Independence began in darkness with a power cut but just as Ambassador Marija Efremova began to speak, the room lit up. It was a fitting symbol of the small country in the Western Balkans emerging from gloom and uncertainty in its first 20 years of independence to a nation on the threshold of Euro-Atlantic integration. In her Independence Day address, the Ambassador said her country had made remarkable progress over the past 20 years, adding that she hoped the still unresolved issue over Macedonia’s name would be solved so that the state could take its place among the family of nations in the EU and Nato. The importance of the occasion was underlined by a video message by the President of Macedonia Mr Gjorge Ivanov.
