Landmark anniversary
A blast of the impressively long Karnay ceremonial brass trumpets signalled the start of Uzbekistan’s landmark 20th Anniversary of Independence in London. In his Independence Day address, Ambassador Otabek Akbarov said the national holiday was very important to Uzbeks because it marked the start of an ancient nation embarking on a new stage in its history and development. It hasn’t been easy, he said, and he was keen to thank Uzbekistan’s foreign partners, especially Britain, for supporting his young country. Two Britons, Dr Hartley Booth and Professor Siddharth Saxena, were given special awards for their contribution to Uzbek-British relations. After the award ceremony, guests enjoyed a feast of Uzbek food and cultural exhibitions as well as performances of dance and music.
