"Estonia is a young state but a very old nation," Estonian Ambassador Dr Margus Laidre told an audience of ambassadors, politicians and the odd football star who joined him to toast the Baltic country's 90th birthday within the grand surroundings of the Banqueting Hall and its magnificent ceiling painted by Rubens. Guest of honour Mr Tonis Lukas, Estonian Education minister, thanked Britain for standing by his country during the long years of Soviet occupation. After the speeches, guests were given a performance by Gregorian chant ensemble Vox Clamantis and the Weekend Guitar Trio.
