Spring fever
On a glorious spring day the Bulgarian Embassy celebrated the 130th anniversary of the Treaty of San Stefano, which liberated the nation from the Ottoman Empire. Diplomats joining Ambassador and Mrs Matev were in especially good spirits – and it wasn’t just because of the fine Bulgarian wine on offer. Each guest was given a ‘martenitsa’ – a red and white woollen tassel traditionally worn during the spring festival, giving the wearer good health, happiness and luck.
