From global empire to global hub
British diplomacy should emulate the City’s openness to become a global diplomatic hub, Foreign Secretary David Miliband said in his first Easter Banquet Speech hosted by the Lord Mayor of London Alderman David Lewis. Although its empire has long gone, Britain has a unique legacy of international networks with which to mobilise nations to collective action, he added. Speaking to an audience of ambassadors and high commissioners, the Foreign Secretary outlined the four priorities for a new foreign policy: counter proliferation and counter terrorism; conflict resolution; achieving a low-carbon, high growth world economy; and effective international institutions to better cope with shared global threats.
