It's not every day that Prime Minister Gordon Brown turns up to a diplomatic reception; but it isn't every day that a country celebrates 60 years of statehood. Hundreds of well-wishers, including diplomats, MPs and cabinet ministers, crowded into the Park Plaza Victoria Hotel for the Yom Ha'atzmaut celebration. Speaking on the occasion, Foreign Secretary David Miliband said Britain and Israel enjoyed a close bilateral relationship, adding: "We seek to use our position as a friend of both Israel and the Palestinians to help make progress towards a two state solution, allowing both peoples to live in peace."
