Call to action
High food and fuel prices are threatening to derail Africa's progress on achieving the Millennium Development Goals, Lord Malloch Brown said in his Africa Day address. Echoing the statement of the AU Chairman Tanzanian President, Jakaya Kikwete, the Africa Minister said the immediate humanitarian response needed to be backed up with long-term policies that would benefit the poor, and called on world leaders to get the MDGs "back on track" at the UN Summit in September. He also saluted Africa's "new" donors China, India and Brazil for helping the continent to build a modern infrastructure that would enable it compete globally, but said African nations should guard against building up impossible debt burdens. He concluded by saying Africa now had the institutions to help the continent face the challenges of the 21st century.
