Ambassador Wurth with one of his works of art

Art imitating life
Ambassador Wurth says his art is an escape from his work – but his work does seep through, he admits. At his recent solo exhibition at the European Commission gallery, Swiss Ambassador Alexis Lautenberg asked him to interpret the meaning behind his large abstract works. Ambassador Wurth explained that a grid-like pattern is imposed on free shapes to form blocks in a wall – but that there is always an escape from the grid. “Lately, though, I find there are less escape routes...” he added mysteriously. Translated into layman’s terms: European politics can sometimes be like banging your head against a brick wall – especially if the Lisbon Treaty is anything to go by.
